Internet of Santa

“You better watch out” for these festive applications of Thinglabs IoT solutions

Santa Claus is coming to town, that we know for sure. But how is he possibly doing this in the 21st Century?

He sees you when you’re sleeping

While it may have been the case in the past, due to GDPR it is unlikely that Santa is actually watching you while you sleep. What may be happening nowadays is Santa is using secure surveillance systems to safeguard the homes of Ireland. 4G enabled cameras allow him to securely stream to his headquarters in the North Pole without the need to connect to WiFi. Thinglabs offer tailored data plans for video over 4G/5G that can be trusted by even the man himself.

He knows when you’re awake

With the surveillance system, Santa will know when you’re out and about. But what about when you’re awake and inside? Passive infrared (PIR) sensors identify motion by detecting infrared light given off by a moving object or person that emits heat. A device equipped with a PIR sensor and NB-IoT connectivity would be perfect for a non-invasive solution to checking whether the subject in question is awake. NB-IoT is a low power technology designed for communication of small amounts of data over long distances, i.e., to the North Pole. NB-IoT sims from Thinglabs come with support and dashboards that prioritize reliability in this critical application.

He knows if you’ve been bad or good

There is no sensor (that we’re aware of) for sensing whether someone is bad or good, so Santa is still relying on traditional elf surveillance, both undercover elves and the newer Elf on the Shelf fleet. Reports are processed in an electronic system to generate lists that Santa will use on his deliveries. To access these lists remotely from anywhere in the world, Santa uses a tablet equipped with a Thinglabs multi-network sim. This allows him to check it twice, securely and reliably, all through the night.

While you may not have to visit the entire world in one night, companies of any size can benefit from Internet of Things technology. Reach out to our team (+353 (0)44 967 5000 or info@thinglabs.ie) if you’d like to talk more about how Thinglabs can make your systems smarter and more connected.
